    Towards Active Event Recognition

    No full text
Directing robot attention to recognise activities and to anticipate events like goal-directed actions is a crucial skill for human-robot interaction. Unfortunately, issues like intrinsic time constraints, the spatially distributed nature of the entailed information sources, and the existence of a multitude of unobservable states affecting the system, like latent intentions, have long rendered achievement of such skills a rather elusive goal. The problem tests the limits of current attention control systems. It requires an integrated solution for tracking, exploration and recognition, which traditionally have been seen as separate problems in active vision. We propose a probabilistic generative framework based on a mixture of Kalman filters and information gain maximisation that uses predictions in both recognition and attention-control. This framework can efficiently use the observations of one element in a dynamic environment to provide information on other elements, and consequently enables guided exploration.Interestingly, the sensors-control policy, directly derived from first principles, represents the intuitive trade-off between finding the most discriminative clues and maintaining overall awareness.Experiments on a simulated humanoid robot observing a human executing goal-oriented actions demonstrated improvement on recognition time and precision over baseline systems

IOD-CNN: Integrating Object Detection Networks for Event Recognition

Many previous methods have showed the importance of considering semantically relevant objects for performing event recognition, yet none of the methods have exploited the power of deep convolutional neural networks to directly integrate relevant object information into a unified network. We present a novel unified deep CNN architecture which integrates architecturally different, yet semantically-related object detection networks to enhance the performance of the event recognition task. Our architecture allows the sharing of the convolutional layers and a fully connected layer which effectively integrates event recognition, rigid object detection and non-rigid object detection.Comment: submitted to IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 201

Fast human detection for video event recognition

Human body detection, which has become a research hotspot during the last two years, can be used in many video content analysis applications. This paper investigates a fast human detection method for volume based video event detection. Compared with other object detection systems, human body detection brings more challenge due to threshold problems coming from a wide range of dynamic properties. Motivated by approaches successfully introduced in facial recognition applications, it adapts and adopts feature extraction and machine learning mechanism to classify certain areas from video frames. This method starts from the extraction of Haar-like features from large numbers of sample images for well-regulated feature distribution and is followed by AdaBoost learning and detection algorithm for pattern classification. Experiment on the classifier proves the Haar-like feature based machine learning mechanism can provide a fast and steady result for human body detection and can be further applied to reduce negative aspects in human modelling and analysis for volume based event detection
